Personal
- His father, Brendan, was a well-known and successful Gaelic football star who played on the All-Ireland Championship team (County Offaly in 1982).
- Began playing golf at age 13, inspired by his uncles, who were avid fans of the sport. Was a 12 handicap after one year of playing and was a single-digit player before his 15th birthday.
- Also competed in rugby, soccer, Gaelic football and hurling.

Selected as a captain's pick to compete for Europe at the Ryder Cup, marking his first appearance in the event.

2020 Season
Qualified for the FedExCup Playoffs for the second consecutive season and third total, finishing the season at No. 123 in the FedExCup standings. Claimed one top-10 and made nine cuts in 13 starts, highlighted by a T6 at the World Golf Championships-FedEx St. Jude Invitational.
2019 Season
Made history as he captured his first major title at The Open Championship in Northern Ireland as the championship was held outside of England and Scotland for the first time since 1951. Following the victory, returned to compete in his first FedExCup Playoffs (qualified in 2016, but did not start), advancing to the BMW Championship and ending his season at No. 33 in the FedExCup standings. In total, recorded one win and three additional top-10s, and made nine cuts in 14 starts.

The Open Championship: Won his second PGA TOUR title and first major championship at The Open Championship, defeating Tommy Fleetwood by six shots. Became the first player to win a World Golf Championships event and a major for his first two official victories on TOUR. Became the seventh player to win The Open by six shots or more since 1919, joining Bobby Jones, Walter Hagen, Arnold Palmer, Johnny Miller, Tiger Woods and Louis Oosthuizen. Joined Jason Day, Dustin Johnson and Justin Thomas as winners of a WGC and a major from 2015-19. With a 54-hole total of 197, became the third player to open a major with a three-round total of 197 or better (David Toms/196/2001 PGA Championship, Ernie Els/197/1995 PGA Championship). Third-round 63 was first score of 63 or better on the PGA TOUR. Became the second major champion from the Republic of Ireland (first: Padraig Harrington).

RBC Canadian Open: Recorded four scores in the 60s to tie Webb Simpson for second at the RBC Canadian Open. Represented second runner-up on the PGA TOUR and best finish since the 2016 U.S. Open (T2). For the second time in his career, finished with a 72-hole score of 265 or better (265/2017 Wyndham Championship, 265/2019 RBC Canadian Open).

PGA Championship: Stood T112 after a first-round 75 at the PGA Championship before closing with three rounds in the 60s to finish T8. Only once previously in his career opened with a score higher than 70 and finished in the top 10 (74, T7/2015 Farmers Insurance Open).

RBC Heritage: In search of his second PGA TOUR win, posted a 1-under 70 in the final round to finish T3 at the RBC Heritage. Opened the week with scores of 65-68 to hold the outright lead after each of the first two rounds. Played the par 5s in 10-under for the week, best in the field.

Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship presented by EGA: Earned his fourth European Tour victory at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship presented by EGA. Matched a course-record 10-under 62 in the first round, despite only hitting four fairways at the Abu Dhabi Golf Club. Became the first player in European Tour history to shoot 10-under having hit fewer than five fairways. Won in wire-to-wire fashion, winning by a stroke at 18-under 270 over Richard Sterne.
2018 Season
Made 13 cuts in 19 starts with T12 showings at the RBC Canadian Open and the PGA Championship the best results among four top-25 finishes. Ended the season No. 140 in the FedExCup standings.
2017 Season
Claimed six top-25 finishes in 16 starts on the PGA TOUR in the 2016-17 season, highlighted by a T7 at the Wyndham Championship. At No. 127 in the FedExCup standings, narrowly missed out on advancing to the FedExCup Playoffs. Claimed two top-10 finishes on the European Tour, with a T6 at the BMW PGA Championship his best showing.

Wyndham Championship: Finished T7 in his second Wyndham Championship start (T42-2016), seven strokes behind champion Henrik Stenson. Represented his first top-10 finish since a runner-up showing at the 2016 U.S. Open. Finished the season No. 127 in the FedExCup standings. Posted his career-low PGA TOUR round, a 64, in the second round.

ISPS HANDA World Cup of Golf: Finished T9 at the ISPS HANDA World Cup with teammate Graeme McDowell on the Ireland team at Kingston Heath Golf Club in Australia in late-November.
2016 Season
Made the cut in 12 of 17 PGA TOUR starts, with a T2 at the U.S. Open his best finish. Ranked 87th in the FedExCup following the Wyndham Championship, but opted to play in the final European Tour event before the European Ryder Cup team was decided. Finished the season No. 102 in the FedExCup.

U.S. Open: Entered the final round of the U.S. Open with a four-stroke lead over Dustin Johnson and Andrew Landry, but struggled to a 6-over 76 to finish T2. Became the first player to lead a U.S. Open by four or more strokes and not win since Payne Stewart in 1998 (led by four over Tom Lehman and Bob Tway). Runner-up showing was best finish in four U.S. Open starts (2011-MC, 2014-MC, 2015-T9, 2016-T2). Was seeking to join Martin Kaymer (2010 PGA Championship, 2011 WGC-HSBC Champions) as the only players to record their first two PGA TOUR victories at a major championship and World Golf Championships event. Like U.S. Open champion Dustin Johnson, his week included a one-stroke penalty during the second round when his ball moved after he addressed it on the 16th hole (his seventh hole of the round).

THE PLAYERS Championship: En route to his first-round, 7-under 65, made history at THE PLAYERS Championship, posting 7-under 29 on the back nine at THE PLAYERS Stadium Course to become the first player to post sub-30 score on the back nine. Feat was matched by Rory McIlroy and Kevin Chappell later in the week. Also holed out from 120 yards for eagle-2 on No. 18 in round two, becoming just the sixth player to record an eagle on the closing hole. Finished T16 after only over-par round of the week, a 6-over 78 in the third round, followed by a 1-under 71 on Sunday.

Waste Management Phoenix Open: In his first start at the Waste Management Phoenix Open, held a share of the 18-hole lead before ensuing rounds of 70-72-68 resulted in a share of sixth place with four others. Birdied five of his last seven holes in the final round to post the 68, including the renowned par-3 16th.

Farmers Insurance Open: Made his first PGA TOUR start of the year at the Farmers Insurance Open, where he finished T7.
2015 Season
His FedExCup points earned as a non-member (excluding those won at World Golf Championship events as a non-member) are retroactive and will be counted on the official FedExCup points list. His FedExCup points earned in World Golf Championships events, including those from his victory at the Bridgestone Invitational, are not retroactive. Will have two events (PGA Championship and Wyndham Championship) to try to move into the top 125 in the FedExCup standings. He was the first Special Temporary Member to win on TOUR since Jordan Spieth at the 2013 John Deere Classic.

Turkish Airlines Open: Shot a final-round 66 at the Turkish Airlines Open to pick up a top-10 in the first event of the Race to Dubai's Final Series. Ended the tournament in Atalya at solo-eighth.

British Masters: At the European Tour's British Masters in early October, made a late run at victory at Woburn GC. After opening with a 5-under 66, shot back-to-back 69s to sit in a tie for fifth, three shots behind leaders Kiradech Aphibarnrat and Matthew Fitzpatrick. Shot a 4-under 67 on the final day but it wasn't enough to catch Fitzpatrick, who shot a 68 of his own to win by two strokes. Finished T2.

World Golf Championships-Bridgestone Invitational: Entered the final round of the World Golf Championships-Bridgestone Invitational two shots off the lead before firing a bogey-free 66 to claim a two-shot win over Bubba Watson. Saved the best for last as his tee shot on No. 18 went deep into the left rough. Second shot rattled 141 yards through the trees and landed 11 feet, 1 inch away from the pin. Drained the putt for the birdie-3 to seal the win. Earned his first-career PGA TOUR victory in his 28th start. Claimed a three-year PGA TOUR exemption through the 2017-2018 season. Won his first World Golf Championships event in his ninth start. With his win, he automatically became a PGA TOUR member (since he already accepted Special Temporary Membership).

U.S. Open: Next PGA TOUR top-10 finish came at the U.S. Open at Chambers Bay, where a T9 performance lifted him to 339 non-member FedExCup points for the season. With that number surpassing No. 125 Johnson Wagner's total of 323 from the 2013-14 season, had the ability to accept Special Temporary Membership for the remainder of the 2014-15 Season, giving him unlimited sponsor-exemption possibilities.

European Tour's BMW PGA Championship: Opened poorly at the European Tour's BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth Club in late-May, with a 2-over 74. Rebounded nicely over his final 54 holes, playing his last three rounds in 13-under to T6 with Tommy Fleetwood.

Made three PGA TOUR starts, all coming in major championships. Missed the cut at the U.S. Open then parlayed weekend rounds of 70-65 at The Open Championship into a T9 with Graeme McDowell and Victor Dubuisson. His bogey-free, 7-under 65 in Sunday's final round tied the low score for the week at Royal Liverpool GC.

DP World Tour Championship: Finished 10th on the European Tour's final Race to Dubai standings and recorded a solo-fifth effort at the Race to Dubai's final event, the DP World Tour Championship at Jumeirah Golf Estates in late-November. Shot a final-round 66, tying him with Louis Oosthuizen for best-of-the-day honors.

Alfred Dunhill Links Championship: In October, at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, shot four under-par rounds at the three-course event and finished T6 with Richard Sterne and Louis Oosthuizen, three shots behind winner Oliver Wilson.

ISPS Handa Wales Open: Had a nice outing at the ISPS Handa Wales Open in mid-September. Shot four under-par rounds, including a 68-65-68 start at Celtic Manor to finish at 13-under with Tommy Fleetwood, a stroke behind winner Joost Luiten.

PGA Championship: Added a T46 at the PGA Championship, again firing a solid final round. a 4-under 67 in Louisville.

Alfred Dunhill Links Championship: At the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship in late-September, parlayed four rounds in the 60s, including a third-round 64, to T3, a stroke out of the David Howell-Peter Uihlein playoff.

Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles: Picked up a T10 late in the summer at the Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles, shooting rounds of 67-69 on the weekend in Scotland.

PGA Championship: Earned an invitation to his second PGA Championship, making his first cut in that event (T57).

World Golf Championships-Accenture Match Play Championship: Best TOUR performance came at the World Golf Championships-Accenture Match Play Championship. Defeated Rory McIlroy (1-up) and Carl Pettersson (6 and 5) before falling in the third round to Graeme McDowell, 3 and 2, in Arizona.

2012 Season

BMW Masters: Couldn't overcome a double bogey-6 on the ninth hole during the final round of the European Tour's BMW Masters in late October. Shot a 4-under 68 to finish solo fifth in Shanghai.

Portugal Masters: Won his second European Tour title and first since 2009 when he came from behind on the final day to capture the Portugal Masters. Through 54 holes, was four strokes behind leader Bernd Weisberger. Shot a final-round, 5-under 66 at Oceanico Victoria GC in Algarve to defeat Ross Fisher by a shot. He began his back nine Sunday with a birdie and an eagle to put himself in position then added two more birdies to secure the title.

Lyoness Open in Atzenbrugg: Contended all week at the Lyoness Open in Atzenbrugg, Austria. Eventually settled on a T2 with Thomas Levet, three strokes behind winner Bernd Wiesberger. Shot rounds of 70-68-68-66 at Diamond CC.

Sicilian Open: Was T6 at the Sicilian Open, falling out of contention with a third-round 74. Recovered Sunday with a 5-under 67.

Open de Andalucia: Was only 1-under through 36 holes then shot consecutive, 5-under 67s on the weekend at the Open de Andalucia to T7 at Aloha GC in mid-March.
2011 Season

Dubai World Championship: Added his final top-10 of the campaign, an eighth-place performance at the Dubai World Championship.

Andalucia Masters: Didn't record another top-10 until late October, when he was solo-fourth at the Andalucia Masters. Played well on the final day at Valderrama GC, shooting a 4-under 67, tying him for low-round-of-the-day honors.

BMW PGA Championship: Shot a final-round 68 at the BMW PGA Championship but came up a stroke short of Rory McIlroy's winning 14-under total at Wentworth Club in England. Had a double bogey, two bogeys, an eagle and six birdies for his 4-under 68.

Iberdrola Open: First top-10 of the season was a T5 at the Iberdrola Open in Mallorca, Spain. Was in position to win after a third-round and tournament-low 63 at Pula GC, but he stumbled on the final day, shooting a 4-over 74 to drop back five shots behind winner Darren Clarke.
2010 Season

The Barclays Scottish Open: Waited until July to add his second and final top-10 of the year, a solo-seventh The Barclays Scottish Open, thanks, in part, to a third-round 66 at Loch Lomond GC.

Abu Dhabi Golf Championship: Played well early in the season, shooting a final-round 67 to finish fourth at the Abu Dhabi Golf Championship in January.
Amateur Highlights
- Won the 2007 Irish Amateur Closed Championship, joining fellow Irishmen Darren Clarke, Padraig Harrington, Paul McGinley and Rory McIlroy as past winners of that event.
- Was a member of the Ireland team that won the 2007 European Amateur Team Championship. Was a part of the team that successfully defended its title in 2008. Also won the West of Ireland Championship and the North of Ireland Championship and reached as high
